Why Online Gambling Should be Legalized
One of the questions that new online gambling players ask is whether it is legal or not. The fact is that most sites are, owing to the fact that they obtain licenses from countries or jurisdictions where the activity is allowed. But the controversy remains, particularly in the US and parts of Europe.
One of the difficulties in determining the facts about the issue of whether online gambling should be allowed or not is the fact that all too often, personal biases against the activity become embedded in the discussions, rather than focusing on the actual facts. If one were to remove all prejudice, the benefits from enabling laws that would allow for the operation of online casinos are vast.
First of all, it cannot be denied that Internet casinos and websites are immensely profitable. These sites, and the corporations that run them (most, if not all the major sites are managed by large companies nowadays) rake in millions of dollars. The entire industry makes billions of dollars annually and continues to grow.
The areas where these online gambling casinos operate naturally make a tidy profit too, so from a business point of view, it is only logical for a country to legalize the activity. Case in point would be Las Vegas.
During the 1930s, while the entire United States was mired in depression, Las Vegas was able to stay afloat thanks to the casinos. Today, a great amount of the revenue generated in Vegas are provided by the casinos. Through taxation, the state is able to generate funds that can be used to pay for schools, hospitals etc.
Any country, including the US, can benefit in the same way by legalizing online gambling. By providing them with a license to operate, governments can use the tax money that will be paid for public services. Not the least of which, of course is developing the security measures needed to protect minors from participating.
As for the moral question, let it be said that in the end, gambling, as is everything else in life, are all about personal decisions. It is up to the individual to decide if he or she wants to play or not. It is also rather surprising that those who oppose online casinos do not seem to hold anything against brick and mortar venues.
Clearly, the potential benefits and advantages of legalizing online gambling far outweigh the negatives. For individuals, it makes participation much easier and secure, and for government, more revenues.
